Grand Octopus

Appears as a boss in:

Darius II (1989)
Code Numbers:

In Sagaia:CA60.

Relatives: Octopus and Red Mist.

Is a sub-boss in: Darius Gaiden(1994)

Ah. Octopi. Octopus wasn't terrible, but his tentacles weren't wavy enough, if you get my meaning. On the second try, when you meet his big brother on Mars (with a rather Gigerish setting), Taito got it right in parts.I think if you put him, Octopus and Darius Twin's Red Mist together, you can get a full octopus boss. But anyway. On to Grand Octopus.

I'm Grand Octopus, bitch!.

Tips: Darius II's bosses seem to enjoy bouncing down to meet you. Here's another one who does it, anyway. Like a lot of his cooleagues, he only has two attacks of note, and his first one starts almost as soon as he drops. He sticks out his four front tentacles and advances menacingly towards you. Not bad? He also fires little destructible projectiles at you while squeezing you into the left side of the screen. There also are a few bullets to contend with, almost as an afterthought. The projectiles, though destructible, take far too many shots to concentrate on seriously, so pay more attention to the tentacles and bullets.

When the tentacles are finally gone, Grand Octopus falls back. The top of his mantle dissolves in wireframe (in 1989!) and his head spits out little octopi! Nasty ones, too. They fire five-projectile arcs and the odd bullet. Grand Octopus keeps up his odd-bullet tradition as well. The octopi can come rather thickly. The best way to deal with them is to move in a clockwise circle so that they zoom in on to where you used to be. Keep shooting at the main body of Grand Octopus, and like every other boss, when he turns a bright red you know he's going down.
