Snake bosses are a staple in horizontally-scrolling shoot'em ups, and Sagaia has its own too. But how good was it (thinking of Revenge Shark here...)? Let's see. The third tier of Sagaia is on Venus, if I remember correctly. Open space, closed-area stretch with cannons and spikes to make life unhappy for you, more open space with volcanoes (and Fatty Glutton!) and then-empty space (one of the worst possible backgrounds for a game in space). Eventually Drio Sawm, the first (and only?) worm-like chain in the Darius series, coils onto the screen.
The bullets on the attack below can be a bit hard to see.
Tips:Drio Sawm welcomes you by coiling himself up as much as possible and then firing nine or so homing, but perfectly destructible, missiles. Pow. He then stretched himself out and starts to first move up and down, then starts to circle himself, firing nassty bullets at you from his mouth cannon. His whole body is affected by your shots, so please do lay in thickly. After he turns faster and faster, he suddenly draws himself up to an S (see above) and:
The Darius Ram Attack (TM) strikes again! But his charge isn't too sudden; the coil should give you ample warning. Once he's at the other side of the screen, he starts again the same attacks as before. Being from Sagaia, he turns redder and redder as he gets ready to die. And then-BOOM! 100,000 points for you.
In Super Darius, Drio Sawm is a much more interesting boss, if I may say so. He spins all over the screen and fires bullets from every segment of his body. Quite fluid, much more interesting than his big brother, and MUCH, MUCH more lethal. Expect rotating cube thingies as you will require a lot of time to squeeze in shots at his head while avoiding the bullets.
